Regulations  for  the   Enrolment  of  Foreign  Students

       Welcome to Fujian Normal University (hereafter FNU) located at beautiful Cangshan District, Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province and a famous overseas Chinese hometown in southeast China. Bordering Minjiang River on the north, overlooking fertile fields, and boasting convenient traffic, Fuzhou is reputed as both an ancient city with rich Chinese cultural tinges and a newly prosperous industrial city and tourist attraction. Founded in 1907, FNU has gone through many vicissitudes over the past century. Now it has grown into a comprehensive university of both the arts and science, consisting of 27 colleges,  with 58 specialties for majors and professional training, 69 disciplines offering MA degrees and 18 offering PhD degrees. Complete training system has been formed; under which programs for BA, MA, PhD degrees and postdoctoral research are provided. At present, the university has 1232 teaching and research staff , of whom 50% are professors, associate professors and research fellows,  It is also facilitated with affiliated kindergarten, primary school and high school.

The International College of  Chinese  Studies  of the  Fujian  Normal  University (formerly International Cultural and Educational Exchange Center, FNU), was authorized by the State Education Commission as one of the four Chinese teaching bases admitting from Southeast Asian countries students. In 1997, it got the present name. The International College of  Chinese  Studies  of the  Fujian  Normal  University undertakes the work of recruiting, teaching and administrating foreign students for degree and non-degree courses. With a well-equipped administrative system, highly qualified teachers, advanced teaching and learning means, and well-facilitated buildings and dormitories, the institute creates a comfortable environment for living and studying for foreign students.

一. Course Outline
1. Non-degree-conferring courses:
(1).Chinese language classes:  The  International   College of  Chinese Studies   offers Mandarin  courses  designed  to  improve   the  students'  communicative   skills   and  raise their ability  for  the  Chinese   language  competency test , Hanyu   Shuiping   Kaoshi (HSK) . The following   is   an outline   of   the  courses   available:

Elementary  Chinese:  speaking,  reading  and  writing  at  elementary  level.
Intermediate Chinese:  listening, speaking, reading and writing, including intensive reading,  at intermediate level.
Advanced Chinese:listening, speaking, writing, newspaper  reading including intensive  reading, at  advanced  level.
Elective Courses:  Training  classes  for  the  HSK, Comparative cultural studies of China and foreign countries,  Spoken Chinese for trade purposes, Written Chinese for trade purposes, Applied computer in Chinese, Selected readings of modern and contemporary Chinese literature,  Modern Chinese  grammar,  Modern  Chinese  characters, Chinese  lexicology,  Classical Chinese, Classical  medical  texts, Appreciation  of  classical poetry,  Chinese history  and geography,  Chinese martial arts, Chinese  calligraphy. 
Lectures:  Chinese culture, Chinese  history, China's  economy, Traditional  Chinese painting, Chinese music, Chinese culinary arts, etc.

(2). Short-term courses: Short-term Chinese classes, Chinese language teacher training, Traditional Chinese painting, Yijing studies, Chinese culture and travel, etc. Other short-term classes can be arranged at the request of applicants.

(3).Depending on individual University departments, foreign students may choose
from 47 different courses to enrol in.

2. Degree-conferring courses:

a.  Chinese major
Courses offered especially for foreigners, and those from zero level in Chinese. 

b.Students may be admitted to study degree-conferring courses ( from associate degree to doctorate) in the different departments of the University.  After  attaining  an appropriate  level  in  the  Chinese language proficiency test (HSK) , students may apply to  enrol  in a relevant course of study. (please refer to the enclosed "Course Outline" form for details).

二. Answers to Common Applicant Queries 
Q: What are the conditions for enrolment?
A:
All foreigners who are physically healthy may apply. For non-degree-conferring courses, there are no restrictions based on the academic history or age of the appicants. However, applicants for undergraduate programs should have graduated from senior- middle school and hold relevant HSK qualifications. Those applying to undertake a Master's degree should be under 35 years of age and should hold a Bachelor's degree from China or its equivalent. Applicants for Doctorates should be under 40 and should hold a Masters degree from China or its equivalent. Apart from relevant HSK qualifica- tions, those applying to undertake Doctorates will also need to provide references from 2 professors or associate professors, as well as 1 or 2 copies of his research paper.

Q: When should I apply to enrol?
A:
Under normal conditions, those seeking to enrol in September should apply before the end of June;those seeking to enrol in February should apply before the end of December of the previous year; those seeking to enrol in April (elementary Chinese class) should apply before the end of January. In special condition,  students  could apply  to join the classes during the middle of the semester.

Q: What are the procedures for applying?
A:
Contact the Foreign Students Affairs Office of the International College of Chinese Studies to obtain an application form and other relevant material. Non-degree-oriented students must complete the application form and provide proof of personal identification from their place of residence or the copy of the passport. The applicant must also forward 10 passport-size photographs.  Degree-oriented  students  must provide the aforemen-tioned material as well as certified copies of academic records,  academic transcripts , references and HSK qualifications.

Q: What are the admittance and enrolment procedures?
A:
The University will examine all the incoming applications. Those who are accepted will be sent an "Admittance Notice" and "Foreign Students Visa Application Form for Entry into China" (JW202). The student must take these 2 documents to the Chinese Consulate or Embassy in his or her country and apply for a Student Visa (X Visa) . The student must report to the International College of Chinese Studies of the Fujian Teachers University within the dates specified in the "Admittance Notice" , otherwise the enrolment rights will be cancelled unless he/she has special reason. Students wishing to use the University's pick-up service on their arrival in China must notify the Foreign Students Affairs Office in advance and specify their flight number and arrival time. Those arriving at Fuzhou's Changle International Airport can catch an airport bus (which departs every 10-15 minutes) to the final stop at the Chinese Civil Aviation Ticket Centre, where the University will have a vehicle awaiting them. If you need us to meet you at the airport, please inform us beforehand. And the cost of renting a car (some 150 yuan RMB) will be covered by the student. If the students, who fly to Xiemen airport, need us to meet at the Xiemen airport, please inform us 3-days beforehand. And the cost 250 yuan RMB will be covered by the student.

Q: How do I select a language class suitable for my level?
A:
Prior to the formal commencement of classes, students will sit a standard version of the Chinese language proficiency test (HSK), and will be allocated to an apposite class according to their grades.

Q: What are the payment procedures?
A:
Students staying less than 1 or 1 academic year must pay all expenses at the time of enrolment. Apart from a registration fee of US$40, students must pay for study materials fee US$40, tuition, and accommodation upfront. Students staying more than a year must pay their annual fees at the beginning of each academic year.

Q: What are the procedures for transferring from Chinese languages studies to a 2/3-year or 4-year program?
A:
To transfer, the student must apply in advance and provide all the relevant documents (see the conditions for enrolment) .

Q: What are the procedures for obtaining a residence permit in China?
A:
University personnel will assist the student in obtaining a residence permit at the beginning and the end of each semester. Students wishing to exit China during the semester will have to undertake all the necessary visa arrangements themselves.

Q: Where is the University located?
A:
The University is located in Fuzhou City. Buses numbered 16,20,46 and 52 make frequent return trips to the central business district. The University is conveniently situated within easy walking distance of banks, post offices, hospitals, supermarkets and shops.

1. Semester dates
(1).Chinese language courses:
Autumn classes: Semester commences in September Spring classes: For the interme-diate and advanced classes, semester commences in February; for the elementary class, semester commences in April.

(2). Courses other than Chinese:
Ordinary students: Semester commences in September for a duration of 1-2 years. Undergraduate students: Semester commences in September for a duration of 4 years. Master and Doctorate students: Semester commences in September for a duration of 3 years.

(3).Short-term courses:
For group enrolment of approximately 8 students, the semester commencement date and lesson content are negotiable.
